When To Run Is Wise

Yesterday was my birthday and i was excited by the many birthday wishes, prayers, texts and gifts i got from loved ones. I really enjoyed the show of love and care i got from loved ones. I felt important and special. To all my friends in real life and on social media especially Facebook. I want to say a very big thank you.
There was a big caption on my big day though. I have these set of neighbours who i live close to in school. They didn’t know it was my birthday till late in the afternoon. When they discovered that day was my birthday they decided to celebrate my birthday the Nigerian way. They went out in search of canes and sticks that they would use to flog me. when i came back from school i met two girls my neighbours who lived opposite my house. They told me that some of my friends had come to look for me and they didn’t find me around. I greeted them and went inside. Some minutes later i peeped outside my window only to see that about two guys had joined them with really huge sticks. I knew there would be some others in hiding. I nodded my head in disbelieve, so they were planning to give me a beating with those. They sent one of my close friends Basit to lure me out. But i had discovered their plan. I told Basit i knew what was going on and i refused to open the door for him. I locked my door from inside and told him i would come outside shortly.
They waited for me outside and they issued me threats and urged me to come out and receive the small beating of happy birthday they have for me.I wondered in my mind whether they gave people small beating with big sticks. I took my bath and ran away through the back door to the school hostel where i slept till the next day.

Morale Of The Story

What’s the morale of this story. I ran away because it was very foolish to stay home and get beaten for no reason. My mum and dad called and lovingly wished me happy birthday. My younger ones sang a happy birthday song for me. I got showered with gifts and love from friends. And here are these set of neighbours outside with thick, long and strong canes waiting to beat me. I knew very well that they will pour water on my body before or during the beating to make it worse. And you know what pains me the most, this set of people that love beating people on their birthday in school. They never ever remember to buy gifts or presents for the people they beat. And it’s either they travel home to celebrate their own birthday or they keep it a complete secret.
Now how many times in life have we failed to run. Running is not always a sign of weakness or cowardice. Sometimes it actually could really be an indication of wisdom and strength. When you have nothing to lose by running away and everything to lose by staying back and fighting or in my case staying back and getting beaten it’s a wise choice to run. Supposing i went outside to meet with my neighbours and got beaten or maybe lost my temper and engaged in a fight. I would have obviously lost. But running to the hostel to spend the night with other friends ensured i had nothing to lose. Maybe i lost a little pride but who cares the run was worth it.
David fleed away from Saul. It’s no surprise it was this same David who killed Goliath. Moses ran away from Egypt. The same Moses that led the Israelites out of Egypt. All am saying is that retreating could actually be a very wise decision at times.

It is always foolish to run away? What do you think? Have you had any experience similar to me? Let’s hear your views in the comment box.
